Few issues are more sensitive and contentious than abortion, especially in the USA where debate pits the right of a woman to control her body against the right of a fetus to live. Increasingly, the US abortion battle is exported to the developing world via foreign assistance. The USA is the main donor in health, giving over $2 billion per year, and thus has huge influence. Most developing countries and non governmental organisations receive US funding. Because “pro-choice” and “pro-life” positions seem irreconcilable, this high-stake contest seems certain to continue.
