Within two years (2010/2011), stakeholders in Uganda have taken a series of actions to accelerate progress in achieving MDG 5—improving maternal health—and with it ensuring universal access to reproductive health and family planning. They have responded to increasing demand for contraception, high and stagnant rates of pregnancy-related deaths and a growing population of young people. Setting a new, locally driven agenda for family planning, these government and nongovernmental leaders have capitalized on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s increased emphasis on Uganda’s economic future and the health of mothers and their children.
