WHGI Global Program

Demographic Futures, Population, & Environment

Exploring the links between population, health, and the environment

The William H. Gates Sr. Institute (WHGI) Global Program on Demographic Futures, Population, & Environment examines how population trends shape—and are shaped by—health systems, economic development, and environmental conditions. It focuses on demographic change over time, including fertility shifts, urbanization, migration, and population aging, and what these transitions mean for sustainable development.

WHGI applies rigorous research, data analysis, and cross-sector collaboration to understand the implications of these changes at global, regional, and national levels. A core focus of this work is the Demographic Dividend framework, which examines how shifts in age structure can create opportunities for economic growth when supported by investments in health, education, and gender equity.

Through this program, WHGI supports countries in translating demographic evidence into policy-relevant insights that inform planning, strengthen systems, and advance equitable and sustainable development outcomes.
