Three foundations—the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, David & Lucile Packard Foundation, and William + Flora Hewlett Foundation—invested nearly US $100 million to mobilize and sustain effective family planning advocacy, amplify the voices of advocates, and diffuse advocacy best practices between 2009-2023.
Over the last 13 years, Advance Family Planning (AFP) has achieved new advocacy wins, protected funding and policy gains, honed the SMART Advocacy approach, and seeded a community of practice. AFP’s experience suggests a high likelihood of advocacy and funding for family planning continuing, but this momentum’s sustainability will require dedicated advocacy funding.
