Engage with Gates Institute at #PAA2023
The Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health is excited to be a part of the 2023 Population Association of America (PAA) Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. This important event brings together demographers and social and health scientists from around the world to share the latest research and insights in the field of global health.
GI is proud to participate in PAA2023 and showcase our cutting-edge research in demography, population, and family planning. We will have a team of experts on hand to engage with attendees and present over 15 scientific sessions featuring our research. Our participation will include presentations from our Research, Measurement and Performance Monitoring platform, Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA), and our Demographic Dividend Initiative (DD), among others.
Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA)
Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA), GI’s Research, Measurement and Performance Monitoring platform, collects actionable data on a variety of family planning topics that inform policies at national and sub-national levels.
PMA will be presenting at 15 sessions at PAA—including oral, flash and poster sessions—exploring topics in fertility preferences, desires, and intentions; FP access and quality; contraception and abortion in adolescence; and more.
Research reflects key priorities, advancements, and challenges in PMA focus countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and more.

Demographic Dividend Initiative (DD)
The Gates Institute’s Demographic Dividend Initiative (DD) framework identifies family planning, maternal and child health, education, women’s empowerment, labor market, and governance and economic institutions as key areas of support to harness a demographic dividend.
The abstract, “Measuring consensus in the perception of national efforts to harness a demographic dividend among local experts,” was presented at the 2022 International Conference on Family Planning and has been accepted to PAA 2023, as well as the International Health Economics Association Annual Congress.

Power Shifting
The social structures, funding models, and knowledge generation practices that define global health are rooted in a history of inequality, exploitation, and racism. In continuation of the Power Shifting conversations initiated at ICFP2022, members of the family planning and reproductive health community will have the opportunity to host a meaningful dialogue at PAA 2023 aimed at moving actions forward to “de-colonize” global health.
The half-day session, “Power Shifting and Advancing Equity in Research Collaborations,” will take place prior to the start of the conference on Wednesday, 12 April 2023 from 1-5 PM.
Speakers include Amanda Burgess, Gates Institute; Goodness Ogeyi Odey, International Youth Alliance for Family Planning, ICFP Youth Trailblazer Award Winner; Jean Christophe Rusatira, Bloomberg School of Public Health; Althea Anderson, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; Dr. Jacques Emina, University of Kinshasa; Dr. Thomas A. LaVeist, Tulane University; and more.
