A Global Leader in Family Planning Since 1999

The Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health launched in 1999 in response to a global need for investments in effective family planning and reproductive health programs and research efforts. Building on the Bloomberg School’s global public health leadership, the Institute’s work translates science into action with projects in 22 countries.

Twenty years later, the Institute celebrates progress to date and forges new commitments to increase access to family planning and to improve reproductive health for women and men, communities and countries across the world.

We invest in bold ideas to unlock progress on family planning, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and related health areas.

    PMA Ethiopia Second Cohort Six-Week Postpartum Maternal and Newborn Health Technical Report, 2021-2023 Cohort laura.wells@jh… Tue, 02/20/2024 - 08:44 To fill the data gap in priority maternal and newborn health (MNH) indicators in Ethiopia and assess factors associated with the initiation and continuation of care, PMA Ethiopia implemented a longitudinal survey that enrolled and followed pregnant women at six-weeks, six-months, and one-year postpartum. This report summarizes key findings from the six-week postpartum survey. During the six-week postpartum interview, resident enumerators collected information on essential MNH services, including receipt, timing, and specific components of antenatal care (ANC), delivery care, and immediate postnatal and neonatal services. Data collection for the six-week postpartum interview occurred between November 2021 and November 2022. Among 2,297 eligible women, 2,072 completed the interview. The goal of the panel survey is to monitor the use of essential MNH services and assess individual, partner, and community factors associated with service utilization. Each survey is tailored to the relevant period of women’s pregnancy and childbirth experiences, covering a range of priority RMNH indicators identified by the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.
