FPNN’s Malawi Trip Yields Global Recognition: Community Reporter Nominated for Prestigious Young Journalist Award

In May 2024, the Family Planning News Network (FPNN) embarked on an important journey to Malawi, where our community reporters highlighted critical stories on health and social justice that would have otherwise remained untold. One of the impactful stories reported during this trip has garnered international attention.

We are thrilled to announce that FPNN community reporter Ridwan Karim Dini-Osman has been shortlisted for the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2024 for his courageous reporting on the experiences of LGBTQ individuals in Malawi and their struggles to access healthcare. His investigative report, published as part of FPNN’s coverage, has been recognized as one of 12 outstanding entries from nearly 300 journalists globally. This prestigious award celebrates young reporters who demonstrate exceptional journalistic skill and bravery in telling meaningful, often challenging, stories.

This nomination not only honors Ridwan’s work but also underscores FPNN’s mission to amplify underrepresented voices and cover stories that make a global impact. The stories uncovered during our time in Malawi reveal the true power of creating opportunities for community reporters to engage with critical issues. Without FPNN, these stories would never have reached the audiences they deserve.

As we await the final announcement of the award winner at the Foreign Press Association Awards in November, we celebrate Ridwan’s achievement and the continued dedication of all FPNN reporters. Their commitment to spotlighting untold stories makes waves far beyond the communities they cover.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Malawi trip’s outcomes and the powerful journalism produced by our talented FPNN reporters.
