Dr. Makumbi, a Gates Fellow and seasoned public health professional, brings a wealth of experience in teaching, research, and community service to the discussion.
With a background that spans across continents, Dr. Makumbi holds a Bachelor of Statistics from Makerere University, and earned his Master of Health Sciences in 2000, followed by a PhD in 2004 from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH).

Dr. Makumbi, is a Gates Fellow and public health professional involved in teaching, research and community service. He graduated with a Bachelor of Statistics from Makerere University, and Master of Health Sciences’00 and PhD’04 from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). His training at BSPH was supported by the William H. Gates Sr. Institute and NIH Fogarty.
Dr. Makumbi’s research interests include sexual and reproductive health, orphanhood and HIV, evaluation of health programs, clinical and community trials, design, implementation and statistical analysis of surveys, equity in health services, and HIV intervention and is widely published in peer-reviewed journals.
He is a Uganda team-lead for Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) which monitors progress of Family Planning indicators, a Uganda team co-lead on the USAID-funded project Research for Scalable Solutions (R4S), a member of the Family Planning TWG, Equity Steering Committee, National Self-care Guideline Expert Group, Safety Monitoring Team (SMT) of the Safe Male Circumcision at the Ministry of Health, and National Demographic Dividend Steering Committee (NDDSC) at the National Population Council.
He has conducted international trainings in data management and statistical analysis at the Ministry of Health, Family Health & Nutrition Unit in Seychelles and, at the National Food Technology Research Center in Botswana through support by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2018.
