Local Governments are Key to Financing a Sustainable Urban Future for All:

TCI’s Approach to Mobilizing Local Resources for Family Planning

The Challenge Initiative (TCI) and the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) held this conversation on Tuesday, 31 October in celebration of World Cities Day 2023!

In an ever-evolving global landscape, the role of local governments cannot be understated. They are the linchpin in the endeavor to create sustainable, thriving cities that benefit all communities. This insightful webinar delved into the strategies, challenges, and successes of local leaders from three countries supported by TCI:

  • India
  • Nigeria
  • Uganda.

TCI empowers local governments to lead their own family planning programs for sustainable impact by scaling up high-impact interventions that have been proven successful. By working through existing government and community systems and institutionalizing these practices, TCI facilitates self-reliance and sustainability, while achieving impact.

After cities self-select to be part of TCI, they demonstrate their commitment by bringing their own human and financial resources to the table. TCI, in turn, provides support from a “Challenge Fund” to incentivize participation. To date, more than 170 local governments have committed more than $100 million to implement high-impact family planning programs across 13 countries in Africa and Asia.

In this webinar, local leaders from cities that have concluded their direct engagement with TCI share lessons learned from their experience. They also explain how they have sustained gains made during the period they were directly engaged with TCI.
