Adolescent & Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYSRH)
Over the last 20 years, Gates Institute has continued to build upon an essential pillar of our work by identifying, encouraging and preparing this next generation of family planning and reproductive health leaders.
Gates Institute continues to identify, develop, and connect the new generation of family planning leaders through powerful programs and platforms such as the Gates Scholars, the 120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders, Gates Institute Global Health Leadership Accelerator program, the ever-growing, youth-focused opportunities at the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP), and the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IYAFP), which was born out of the 2013 ICFP.
AYSRH Initiatives from Gates Institute
NextGen Catalyst Initiative
The NextGen Catalyst Initiative aims to ensure harmonized efforts to develop and leverage emerging family planning leaders across the world to accelerate the transformation of FP & SRHR program implementation, research and advocacy agendas, as well as scale-up high-impact solutions worldwide.
120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders
120 Under 40 shines a light on the “positive disruptions” made by young leaders in family planning, enabling others to model their behavior and build on their success. The project’s international profile increases awareness of family planning as critical to young people’s health and well-being and essential to sustainable global development.
Global Health Leadership Accelerator
The Leadership Accelerator is the second generation of the acclaimed Gates Institute Summer Institute in Reproductive Health and Development, which trained close to 600 mid-career professionals from 71 countries in two- to three-week courses between 1999 and 2014. Attendees hailed from academia, research centers, donors, governments, and NGOs, and were selected for their promise as leaders in global health. Graduates of the Summer Institutes have become government ministers, policy leaders, CEOs of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), parliamentarians, leading researchers and advocates, and even a head of state.
International Youth Alliance for Family Planning
IYAFP was born out of an identified need at the International Conference on Family Planning in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2013 by a group of youth from around the world. Since then, IYAFP has grown to become a global organization that exists for youth, entirely led by youth. They leverage youth energy, creativity and expertise to improve advocacy, and set a fully youth-led agenda.
