General Description

Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 (PMA2020) is a research project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health in collaboration with the JHU Water Institute and in-country partner universities and research institutes. PMA2020 is designed to facilitate annual progress reporting in support of the goals and principles of Family Planning 2020 (FP2020). The project supports nationally representative household and facility surveys that utilize a mobile-assisted data collection and dissemination system to produce low-cost and rapid-turnaround data. PMA2020 data are used to routinely update national indicators on family planning, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and other health areas, currently in 11 countries in Africa and Asia, including: Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, DR Congo (Kinshasa and Kongo Central), Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Niger, India (currently Rajasthan), and Indonesia.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

We seek a motivated research assistant to provide overall back-stopping support to our communications and program teams for the design, coordination, and dissemination of communications materials of PMA2020 survey results with a global audience. Tasks may include:

  1. Writing/editing blogposts and news stories
  2. Updating and/or analysis of web and social media content
  3. Monitoring online and published resources for mentions of project activities.
  4. Coordination and logistics support for PMA2020-sponsored events and annual meetings
  5. Assistance in preparing reports and publications.

This position is particularly well-suited for someone with an interest in communications, and dissemination of population survey design results to a wide audience, and who is willing to be flexible and take on a diverse array of tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • We are looking for a master’s or undergraduate student at Johns Hopkins, with experience in communications and/or media, survey research and design, mHealth, and/or research program coordination
  • An interest in global reproductive health; water, sanitation and hygiene; nutrition; and/or maternal and child health is also valued
  • Must be a fast learner with independent problem solving ability, attention to detail, and strong communication skills. Requires the capacity to work quickly and independently, as the environment is fast-paced with many moving parts.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, STATA, computer programming, graphic design, web design, and/or social media a plus.
  • French, Hindi, Urdu, Bahasa Indonesian, or other program country language proficiency a plus. Position is based in Baltimore. Willingness and ability to travel during academic breaks is a plus.
